When a Door Closes

What happens when a door suddenly closes on us? When something we had planned doesn’t eventuate, a relationship ends, or an opportunity disappears?

Recently, I had been working on a project. I had it mapped out, planned and ready to pull the trigger. And then it seemingly got blocked. What I mean is, the person who was meant to help make it happen just disappeared. It was as if the door I was hoping to step through got shut in my face… hard.

Dazed and confused, I ranted at the universe about the injustice, and the unfairness of having my plans stopped. I got angry at my Guides: “Why aren’t you listening to me? Why aren’t you helping? What have I done?” When a door closes, it can feel as if we are being punished.

Then, after a few days of wallowing, I suddenly recalled a video I’d seen by David Ghiyam, a teacher on the spiritual wisdom of the Kabbalah, who talked about saying “thank you” to the universe when things don’t work out as planned. In fact, he suggests that cancellations, rejections, lost opportunities are all the universe’s plan to bring us more of what is meant for us.

I’ve noticed that this is often how it works. When the ego quietens down and the emotional reaction settles, our Guides or Higher Consciousness have a chance to be heard - through words, through memories, or songs that point us in the right direction.

Hmmm, thank you.

So I started breathing again, centering myself and quietening down. What if this was a redirection and not a block? As I sat with this, it occurred to me that maybe, just maybe, I didn’t have the whole picture yet. And maybe, just maybe, this “block” was actually a blessing or simply a pause while something is being put into place.

My understanding of the universe is still expanding, and with it my faith. And while it is easy to trust when things are going well, I’m starting to think that the real work is staying in trust when things don’t go as I planned. If there is indeed a much greater intelligence and life force at play, then who am I to argue that I know best?

Even more interesting is the idea that if our Guides or Higher Consciousness can block things for us, then they can also open doors and make magic happen for us too. I’ve experienced this, so I know it’s true.

So perhaps we don't need to understand every closed door. Perhaps we just need to say “thank you” and be ready.

I’ll keep you posted…
